Stack Overflow Searches Drop 65% After AI Tools Like ChatGPT Started
I was looking at some data from Google Trends recently and found something really interesting. I wanted to share what I discovered about how we developers are changing the way we search for coding help.
So I compared two things: how many people search for "Stack Overflow" and how many search for "ChatGPT" from 2019 to 2025. The results really surprised me.
What I Found Out
For a long time, Stack Overflow was the go-to place for coding questions. Up until 2022, it was doing pretty well. People would post their problems and wait for answers from other developers, often finding that their issues had already been resolved before.
But then around late 2022, something changed. Less and less people started looking up Stack Overflow on Google. And guess what happened at the same time? ChatGPT and other AI tools started getting really popular.
The timing is not a coincidence. When ChatGPT became available to everyone, developers slowly started using it instead of Stack Overflow.
By 2025, more people are searching for ChatGPT than they ever searched for Stack Overflow. That's a big change in just a few years.
Why This is Happening
I think there are some good reasons why developers like me are switching:
With ChatGPT, you don't have to wait for someone to answer your question. You type your problem and get help immediately.
It's like having a conversation with someone who knows programming. You can ask follow-up questions and explain your specific situation.
Instead of copying code from different answers and trying to make it work, AI can write code that fits exactly what you need.
Don't get me wrong - Stack Overflow still has lots of good information. I still use it sometimes when I need to understand something better. But for quick help and specific problems, AI tools are just more convenient.
This change shows how technology keeps evolving. What we used 5 years ago might not be what we use today.
